Karen Bowler (School of Earth, Ocean and Environmental Sciences - University of Plymouth)
A talk covering the thoughts and ideas of Leonardo da Vinci, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Gregory Bateson, and their relevance for today. Living in three different centuries, these three holistic thinkers were multi-talented polymaths. They were concerned with the big questions – the nature and meaning of life, knowledge, understanding and consciousness. All were ahead of their time in seeing these questions as part of an interconnected whole, and their perceptions have much to tell us our current ecosystem crisis.
Karen is currently completing her PhD entitled "The Irish Sea: a socio-ecological system" and been closely involved with the new Centre for Sustainable Futures at the University of Plymouth.
